The RISD MFA Grad Show opens Thursday, May 27 and is open daily to the RISD community from 12pm until 5pm. The Graphic Design exhibition will be held in the WaterFire Arts Center, located at 475 Valley Street in the Olneyville neighborhood. The other half of the exhibition will be held in the Chace Center. The exhibition closes on Saturday, June 5th.

Raise a toast for all our BFA and MFA students have accomplished and to give thanks to the amazing staff who have supported you through out, and professors who have worked hard to maintain a high level of teaching and learning.

This year, Senior Degree Projects will be presented on Zoom May 27 and 28 (day depends on section) with an optional in-person installation on Thursday, May 27. Installations and reviews are open to those in the RISD community and by invitation of the student. Please arrive at Zoom reviews a minute early and wait to be admitted.

This semester Code Lab will meet on Tuesdays, 10:00 – 11:00 am (EST) on Zoom. The lab will be about 60 minutes and will meet 5 times over the course of the semester. Each meeting will consist of demos that cover key concepts of web programming, and open Q&A, where we’ll walk around and support you as you solve the problem.

• Code Lab is being organized by Nic Schumann, Marie Otsuka, and Minkyoung Kim in conjunction with the GD department, starting in 2020 spring.
• Code Lab will provide key computation basics and relevant skill training for people interested in the practice of programming. We will span file organization through computational abstractions and design patterns. This semester we will work in web programming languages including HTML, CSS, Javascript, and JSON.
• Code Lab will be open to all GD students who need some assistance in basic computational training.
• Code Lab is not for credit, there will be no assignments.
• Code Lab won’t require any commitment other than showing up. It’s about providing support for students enrolled in rigorous computational courses. Students do not have to attend all the sessions.
• Code Lab topics will be announced in advance of the session.

The Senior Show is a physical show open to the RISD community from March 19 until March 23 at the Woods-Gerry Gallery.

Seniors have until March 15th to deliver work for the exhibit to the GD Commons and until March 12th to submit work for the website.

Studio Ghazaal Vojdani is a Design and Art Direction practice, creating close and ongoing work relationships with cultural and educational institutions, independent galleries, editors, curators, designers, and artists internationally. Ghazaal Vojdani acquired her BA (Hons) from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London (2010), and her MFA from Yale University School of Art (2013), both in Graphic Design. The studio is currently based in Paris (FR) after being established in New York. In 2020 Ghazaal launched Europium — a joint practice with photographer Julia Andréone — focusing on creative/art direction and photography, where together they explore image-making.

As a learner, Kameelah Janan Rasheed grapples with the poetics, politics, and pleasures of the unfinished and uncontained. She is invested in Black storytelling technologies that invite us to consider ways of [un]learning that are interdisciplinary, interspecies, and interstellar. Because not all stories are for everyone, Rasheed’s work considers Black storytelling technologies in relation to the surveillance states, or how we tell stories that consider interiority, lenticularity (or varying modes of visibility and legibility), revision, and spiritual syncretism.

Clara Balaguer is a cultural worker. She is the coordinator of the Social Practices course at Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam and teaches Experimental Publishing at Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. In the Philippines, she co-founded Hardworking Goodlooking, a cottage industry publishing hauz, and The Office of Culture and Design, a research platform and residency program that articulated cultural programming with rural and underserved communities. Through her projects, she is interested in the value of vernacular material culture and processes of collectivizing authorship. She often adopts collective or individual aliases that intimate her service in a given project, the latest of which is To Be Determined. She has lectured and exhibited work at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Harvard GSD, Massachusetts; Strelka Moscow, Moscow; Asia Culture Center, Gwangju; Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; and Hangar Barcelona, Barcelona. Balaguer lives and works in Rotterdam.

Queer/Feminist/Praxis in Korea and the Korean Diaspora brings together scholars, artists, designers, and filmmakers to explore performance, visual arts and activism revolving in and around LGBTQIA+ and feminist experiences in South Korea and the Korean diaspora.
The three-week long conference will feature panel sessions, performance and film screenings, artist’s talks, roundtable discussions, and a virtual exhibition.

It’s time for RISD’s art book fair, Unbound! It's RISD's own art book fair that usually happens at the Fleet Library in April. We are so excited that this year the event will still be happening (virtually) via the Unbound website. This website will be used to promote exhibitors’ work, links to social media, websites, sale pages, etc...

Participating in RISD GD’s table at Unbound is totally optional. Select works that you would have wanted to display physically at our table (zines, books, stickers, t-shirts, etc). Your items can be free or for sale, but you need to have your own e-commerce set-up or instagram account where people can DM you, etc — Unbound will simply provide a link to it.

If you would like to participate (anyone in the community can participate: students, faculty, staff), read on!

Please limit your selection to three items.
Here are the instructions to upload your works:
→ Create a folder with your name in the the RISD GD folder on RISD GD folder in the Unbound Google Drive
→ In your folder, put images of your work(s) and a text doc
